Telehealth in Today's Healthcare
Target Audience:
Telehealth can benefit healthcare consumers (patients) and a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals: physicians, patients, case managers, social workers, etc. Telehealth services can also benefit professionals in the pursuit of continuing their education via distance learning. With the growing demand of services provided electronically such as electronic medical records, patient portals, and many smartphone apps to monitor health behaviors, the use of telehealth services will continue to rise; these services are the future of patient-centered care.

Lessons Learned:
I learned a great deal about where telehealth originated
from, I had no idea it started almost thirty years ago with NASA and the
military. I also learned about the differences between telehealth and telemedicine
and its expansion in healthcare. While I knew the basics of what services
telehealth can provide, I was able to expand my knowledge on all the different
capabilities and healthcare services telehealth can offer to consumers and
healthcare professionals as well. I assumed that interactive telehealth was the
only method, but I learned about the ‘store-and-forward’ type of telehealth,
which is greatly beneficial for patients receiving services from multiple
providers. Although there are some issues with telehealth in healthcare, with
the many advancements being made in healthcare technology, its future has a
very positive outlook on the way it will transform the delivery of care to consumers
everywhere.
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your informational video on tele health. You listed a wealth of information on your presentation. What is your intended audience for the presentation?
Your topic peaked my interest for the future trends of tele health. There will be increase in funding to support telehealth, consumer demand due to increase in accountability hospital systems will provide more telehealth services (Becker's Health, 2012). Tele health is here to stay to support the accountability across the healthcare continuum.
Thanks for sharing your presentation.

Sal,
DeleteMy apologies, I forgot to input the target audience in my post, I updated it with that information.
I do believe the use of telehealth in healthcare will grow in the future. As advances in technology continue to be made and patients continue to engage in their care with electronic services, the demand for easy access care such as telehealth will rise.
Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteYou indeed indicate the broad-spectrum audience (lay persons as well as clinicians), however, I think if you targeted this information to one audience or the other, it would have been easier to determine the intended recipient of the information and could have been more beneficial to one group or the other. Regardless, there was a great deal of content here (it will serve you well for our white paper). I especially am interested in the rates of reimbursements. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is definitely expanding their services covered under telehealth, however, they are also increasing their audits of these services for compliance. Many providers are waiting until reimbursements are more commonplace before entering the arena. Of significant interest to providers is the CPT 99091 for time spent interpreting patient-generated data (NLR, 2017). One of the CMS Meaningful Use (MIPS/MACRA) attestations is for increased use of patient supplied data (i.e. PHQ-9, CAGE, etc. screening tools); providers now must interpret this information supplied electronically by the patient and would like to be paid for those services.

Karen,
DeleteI have to say I disagree. I don't think this information needs to be targeted to one specific audience in order to be beneficial. Telehealth can be used in several ways for both the consumer and the healthcare professional and they both can benefit from its use, personally, professionally, and interacting with each other.
I am as well interested to see where the future of telehealth will go as far as reimbursements for providers, in particular for Medicare and Medicaid. Its services can expand the treatment options for many populations, for instance long-term acute care.
Good to disagree and I'm glad you spoke up. I can certainly see the benefits from your standpoint. I my head, I was thinking about this project differently, but, as you point out, it the information can certainly be beneficial when targeting both audiences.
